Podcast and Oxford English Dictionary

The word “podcast” makes the Oxford English Dictionary.

Here is the definition:

podcast
• noun a digital recording of a radio broadcast or similar programme, made available on the Internet for downloading to a personal audio player.
— derivatives
podcasting noun.
— origin early 21st century: from iPod, a proprietary name for a personal audio player.

As Denise Howell pointed out at last night’s Orange County Podcaster’s Meetup, it is interesting that there is no mention of the transmission mechanism, RSS 2.0, that makes the whole thing really a “podcast”.

I’m not so sure the transmission mechanism should be included in a OED definition. Can’t podcasts be delivered via Atom? And wouldn’t it still be a podcast when some newfangled syndication format comes along that’s adopted by the podcasting clients and (at least some) sites?

Still, some mention of the automatic download factor would be good.
