Comments on: Cinephile Series – Scarface

Interesting cinephile series on Scarface. I’ve always felt that Scarface is one of the great overrated films of all time, and never quite understood its cult status — the acting, especially Pacino, often seemed over the top, the characters somewhat shallow, and the music was quite campy. Ultimately, I just don’t care about the characters from start to finish. I love much of Pacino’s work, but Scarface has always struck me as far from his best.

But I really respect Michael’s reviews and analysis and was curious to hear his take on the film, hoping to get some new insights on the film. While I agree that the chainsaw sequence is quite well done and memorable filmmaking, there’s little else in Scarface that I think lives up to the hype.

The interview with Pepe was quite interesting, though, and made the show well worth listening to, even if I can’t agree with your appreciation of this movie as a “great film”.

Michael, you’ve really outdone yourself this time. The Cinephile series is great, but this one really seemed to click. Reel Reviews goes beyond just “movie reviews” by providing great insight into the writers, directors, actors, and all the backdrop behind these great films. Keep it up!

Thanks for the comment. Pepe is a great guy. We spent the better part of the morning just talking about films. In fact, I had just rewatched American Me, the night before so we talked at length about that film as well. I have another interview with Pepe that I recorded about acting and the films he has been in. When I get a chance I’ll get it put together and posted.
